Encaustic Painting: Layers of Meaning
In this workshop I’ll cover the foundational practices of encaustic painting along with exploratory techniques in a hands-on process of discovery and experimentation. We’ll start with the basics: making encaustic medium and encaustic paint, fusing, substrates, materials, equipment, and safety. Then we’ll incorporate techniques of transparency and opacity, surface manipulation/texture, building and removing layers, collage, branding, incising, glazing, and dry brushing. I’ll demonstrate my particular techniques of working with a template as a reference point for drawing, layering with transparent wax, and adding color with oil glaze and collage. Students will experiment toward their own creative ends. September 25-30, 2022.
