This class will cover the foundational practices of encaustic and engage exploratory techniques in a hands-on process of discovery and experimentation. We’ll start with the basics of making encaustic medium and paint, fusing, substrates, equipment, safety, and move to techniques of transparency and opacity, surface manipulation, building and removing layers, collaging, branding, incising, glazing, and dry brushing. I’ll demonstrate my technique of working with a template as a reference point for drawing, layering with transparent wax, and adding color with oil glaze and collage.
